Mobile Number Portability New Rule from December 2019 || How to port a mobile number? || Charges for MNP?

The mobile number portability rule has been changed from December 2019. Today, TRAI (the telecom regulatory authority of India) has introduced new guidelines related to mobile number portability. Now you can switch to any network within 3 to 5 days. Before these guidelines switched from one network to another, it was a little complicated, and the waiting time was about 15 days, which was irritating and could hamper some important work. Now, with the effect of new guidelines, mobile number portability will become easy.

Let's look at the process of mobile number portability step by step.

How to Port?

  • Suppose if you are using Jio, Airtel, or any other operator and want to switch to a different one, the first you will need a unique porting code.
  • For this, you only need to send an SMS from the current operator.
  • Write PORT and then give a space and write your mobile number and send it to 1900.
e.g., PORT 94XXXXXXXX and send it to 1900.
  • Now you receive a unique porting code by SMS.
  • Next, you will need to go to the nearest service center of the desired operator. For example, if you want to switch from Jio to Airtel, then you will need to visit the Airtel service center.
  • Here you will need to confirm your ID and will have to fill out a porting form where you will need to write  Unique Porting Code received by SMS.
  • According to TRAI, the new operator will charge you about Rs. 7 for porting and your desired recharge plan amount. This service center will give you a new SIM card from their company.
  • Now if you are porting to the same circle, the waiting time will be 3 days, but for a different circle, the waiting time will be 5 days. ( In Jammu & Kashmir and the north-east region like Assam, Tripura and others, you will still have to wait for 15 days for porting.)
  • You can now cancel your porting request by sending SMS to your current operator.
Write CANCEL, space your mobile number, and send it to 1900.

e.g., CANCEL 94XXXXXXXX  and send it to 1900.

Eligibility Criteria for Porting :-

  • You must have completed 90 days in the current network.
  • For Postpaid users, you will have to pay your entire old bill.
